Breaking the Spine: Julie Cloutier

Julie Cloutier

Bio:

Julie Cloutier is a San Francisco based artist and designer. She received a Master’s degree in Architecture from California College of the Arts, and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from Colorado University at Boulder. She currently is an Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts where she experiments with drawing through the use of letters, lines, and site-specific structures to construct a visual language.

Statement:

My work responds to perceptual, social and spatial disruptions within existing common site conditions. Through shifted normatives, reveals of decay, and dislodged physical prescriptions, I create new codifications by exposing altered relationships within the landscape of the everyday. I draw upon the use of letters, familiar objects, and lines to re-present and shape an architectural language that communicates between the structure and reader. To heighten an awareness of overlooked networks within the built environment, I explore commonalities within the public realm through shifts in translation, material and readability. By displacing and re-aligning encrypted systems, I aim to expose and decipher an environment that renders conventions legible through the deconstruction and reorganization of the unnoticed.
